Tennessee’s 1971 Cross Country squad included Bill Anderson, John Angel, Doug Brown, Bob Cox, Rick Ellis, Bob Hempson, David Houchin, Guy Kirton, Mark McDevitt, Dan 0'Connor, Leslie Steele, Dave Sylvia, and Dan Zoeller.

This team defeated Marshall and lost to Kentucky in a three way meet; beat Alabama, Tennessee Tech, and the Knoxville Track Club in a four-way meet; lost to Michigan State in a dual meet; finished seventh at the UT Invitational Meet; fourth at the Callaway Gardens Meet, fourth at the NCAA Region 3 Meet, first in the Southeastern Conference Meet; and twenty-first at the NCAA Meet.

The 1971 SEC cross country meet was held in Birmingham, Alabama, on a 4.065 mile course. Tennessee finishers were as follows:
