While I was at UT, I was a counselor at Coach Rohe's Sports Camp, an assistant track team manager, a supervisor of the Study Hall, and an assistant academic advisor to student athletes from all sports. I have many precious memories but one stands out. I was supervising the Study Hall one day and noticed a young athlete crying at his desk. I asked him why. This is what he said: "Coach, my mother sent me not one but two Bibles. But she does not know that I can't read. Can you help me?" This really touched me that he would confide this in me. I got another student athlete who had been through remedial reading to help him.
